Android Developer Challenge 2 Now Open!

The ADC2 opened it's doors today and I submitted two applications.

These two applications are 'Face Invaders - MPs Expenses Edition' (in the Games category) and 'Cineworld' (in the Lifestyle category).

Firstly, 'Project 002', more commonly known as Face Invaders - MPs Edition has been submitted in to the Games category.  I was going to sell this but decided to chance ADC2 instead.  The version in the ADC2 expires on 1st of January 2010, at which point I will start charging for it.  I'd like to say thanks to my beta testers, you know who you are and I will credit properly once I know what's happening with the competition!

Secondly, and I've been keeping this one a secret, the Cineworld application ('Project 003') was originally an exercise in branding, but I found it useful so contacted Cineworld who kindly agreed to let me submit it to the ADC.  Many thanks to Cineworld for allowing me to use their branding and logo, I hope it generates some hits on their website for them (and of course I hope it wins me a stack of cash!).

I've submitted the Cineworld application to the Lifestyle category, but took a fair amount of consideration in deciding which category it fit best in.  The other obvious category was 'Entertainment', so it was a real toss up between the two.

One of my favourite features is the Cineworld widget.  This sits on your phone's home page, always visible, and flips through each of the films currently showing, displaying the times of the next couple of showings at your local cinema:

The main application shows all the current films (in time or alphabetical order) at the selected Cinema and allows the user to open Cineworld's booking page for any showing, with just a couple of taps:

As you can hopefully see the application looks very similar in look and feel to the Cineworld website, but as a native Android application this shows just a little of what you can do with layouts, styles and themes, though I am constantly impressed by what I find in the API and Donut is just around the corner!

The timing of ADC2 couldn't have come at a better time as I am going to France for my summer holidays tomorrow.  This means I don't have to worry about the ADC while I'm away, though I do plan to take my MacBook Pro with me.

Project 004 is under way and is a developer tool.  The first version should be available for free (subsequent versions won't be) beginning in October.  However, you'll just have to wait until I get back from France to find out more.

Á bientôt!
